We are proud to recognize Balsillie School of International Affairs as a valued member of the Impact
Network since 2021! The Balsillie School of International Affairs (BSIA) is an institute for advanced research, education, and outreach in the fields of global governance and international public policy. It offers two masters programs and one PhD program from Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Waterloo and prioritizes sustainability at the core of its operations!

The BSIA actively contributes to sustainability through various initiatives. Their Global Climate Action
Committee (GCAC) drives climate and sustainability projects, while the school has adopted a Net Zero
Greenhouse Gas Emissions Plan with ambitious emissions reduction targets, earning membership in the
Race to Zero for Universities and Colleges. As part of their Net Zero plan, the school has implemented a
unique carbon budgeting process for travel funding which is a unique initiative amongst Canadian
Universities. Additionally, GCAC runs a Community Garden that fosters sustainability discussions and
provides fresh produce, and organizes events like sustainability-themed board game nights, mixers, and
Earth Day clean-ups. These efforts demonstrate the school’s strong commitment to sustainability!

The BSIA brings together top scholars, practitioners, and students to explore and address pressing global issues, including in the area of environmental sustainability. The School has six research clusters, with one focused on “Environment and Resources”. This research cluster offers events and networking opportunities for staff, faculty and students who have an interest in this area. They now also have a formal committee at the School called the Global Climate Action Committee, which helped steer the BSIA to join the Race to Zero and SWR to work towards reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2040.

“The Balsillie School relies on SWR’s expertise for the emissions calculations that underpin the School’s membership in the Race to Zero for Universities and Colleges. We have really appreciated the opportunity to benefit from SWR’s educational workshops, Carbon Cleanse, Earth Day clean-ups, and general advice.”
– BSIA about the Impact Network

The Impact Network has kept the BSIA accountable, and makes sure their sustainability efforts remain
top-of-mind. The Impact Network has provided them with practical tools, resources, and frameworks to set sustainability goals as well as offering ongoing educational opportunities through workshops, webinars, and events to help the BSIA stay informed about the latest trends in sustainability.
