[November 1, 2021] Conrad Grebel University College is Sustainable Waterloo Region’s newest member of the Regional Sustainability Initiative, joining as an Observing Organization! As a member, they become connected to an extensive member network of like-minded organizations to share and learn best practices. Members in our network have invested in better understanding the impacts of their operations on environmental sustainability. They use program resources to build a culture of sustainability among employees, and to engage employees as sustainability advocates while also adapting policy and reducing impact through realistic sustainability targets.
“The issues facing our community and society are all intermingled and Conrad Grebel joining the Sustainable Waterloo Region network is evidence of that,” said Tova Davidson, Executive Director of Sustainable Waterloo Region. “The focus of the college is the arts, humanities, and peace and conflict studies, among other things. Addressing climate change and other environmental issues all works in partnership with the creation of a better, more just world. This is a great addition to the network and we are so excited to be working with them.”
Conrad Grebel University College is located in Waterloo and is situated on the University of Waterloo campus. Conrad Grebel has a residence program for students from first to fourth year and teaches courses at the University of Waterloo in Music, Peace and Conflict Studies, History, Mennonite Studies, Religious Studies, and Theological Studies. Emphasizing values like global engagement, responsible citizenship, and environmental stewardship, their community is vibrant and sustainability-focused, as shown by their students and their initiatives. Grebel alumni too, are working to live in sustainable ways, and as students, set the course for this next step toward a cleaner future.
“It is so exciting to see the passion our students have to fight climate change as we work together as a college community to make our campus more carbon neutral,” said Grebel Director of Operations Paul Penner. “Our students, administration, board, and alumni are committed to implementing the suggestions that come from our newly-formed Green Team with support from Sustainable Waterloo Region.”
In their short time since joining the program, they have expressed interest in advancing the efforts for sustainability through their Green Team. As time progresses we will see their efforts to advance sustainability come to fruition and to embed a culture of sustainability within Grebel.
We are thrilled to have such a vital community organization join the other 90+ organizations working towards more sustainable operations in Waterloo Region, and we can’t wait to see what their first year of membership brings.
