Conestoga Mall is a regional shopping centre located in the city of Waterloo, ON.  Its location directly adjacent to area’s major arterial highway offers this premier regional shopping destination exceptional access and visibility. The centre attracts 6.6 million visitors annually by offering a range of experiences under one roof: shopping at 130+ stores and services including the trade area’s only Apple, H & M and Pink; dining in a landmark Food Court featuring 14 vendors and seating for 800+; entertainment at Galaxy Cinema, or exploring history at the City of Waterloo Heritage Museum

Notable GHG Reduction and Sustainability Projects:

2015

Roof Retrofit: Retrofit of roof membrane over all common areas from bitumen to white membrane.

Compost Compactor: Installed a compost compactor that will greatly reduce the number of pick-ups and therefore, truck emissions.

2014

Lighting Replacements: Replaced all interior halogen lamps (770) & HID lights (197) with LED lights. This project resulted in an energy savings of 327, 707 KWH.

2013

Exterior Parking Lot Lighting  Retrofit Program: Conestoga Mall completed this 2 year project to replace all the metal halide parking lot pole heads and exterior building mounted lights with LED lighting. The project has resulted in savings of 156,000 kWh electricity, and $28,000 in operating costs each year

HVAC Rooftop Replacement: Replaced 180 rooftop units with high-efficiency units.

Waste Diversion: Conestoga Mall increased its waste diversion rate from 62% to 70%. As of August, they surpassed their organics recycling numbers from 2012. The amount of waste is equivalent to 68 electric vehicle.

Building Efficiency: Installed motion detectors to save energy when rooms are not in use, replaced LED tubes, increased corridor lighting efficiency, installed a pressure monitor in their food court so that their make up air unit not always running.

2012

Renewable Energy: Bullfrog Power accounts for 64% of their power usage

Building Efficiency: installed sensors on loading docks to control HVAC, installed building pressure monitor in Food Court for make-up air unit, received BOMA Level 4 certification, installed full building automation systems with multiple light sensors

 

Emissions: Conestoga Mall began tracking their GHG emissions in 2010. The graph below displays their emissions data thus far.

Sustainability Culture:

Sustainability culture is fostered and promoted through the establishment of Conestoga Mall’s Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Committee in their Head Office.

 

Green Team: Their diverse Green Team meets monthly and encompasses employees from the security, maintenance, guest services and mall management departments.

Short Term:

  1.  Interior lighting retrofit to change recess lighting to LED.
  2. Replace doors with more energy efficient ones.
  3. For Earth Week: Random Acts of Green and Planet Earth exhibit

Long Term:

  1. Increase waste diversion rate
  2. Reduce Green House Gases
  3. Reduce the size of Conestoga Mall’s carbon footprint

  • BOMA level 4, BOMA certificate of excellence
  • TOBY outstanding building of the year in the GTA for shopping center categories
  • TOBY for outstanding building of the year in Canada for shopping center categories
  • Recycling Council of Ontario – Gold in Communication, and Silver in Facilities Management.
