Reduction commitment: Observing Organization in Milestone 2

Business Type: Faith Community

The congregation of the Church of St. John the Evangelist is formed by Anglicans who are drawn to the worship experience offered in a place which is, essentially, a green oasis in the core of the center of the City of Kitchener. One of the Marks of the Mission of the Anglican Church is,”…to strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth…”. At St.John’s the support for a Green Passion ministry has been a transformational experience in the life of the congregation. The congregation has linked environmental concerns with their ministry priorities and has moved to the point where, in the words of a member of the parish, ” St. John’s is a place where Living Water is offered to Thirsty Souls on Water Street”

Notable GHG Reduction and Sustainability Projects:

Utilities Reduction:  Utilities at the church are closely monitored to ensure smart usage; a boiler upgrade was carried out in order to minimise leakage in the wintertime. Motion sensors were also added in the washrooms to decrease electricity usage.

Boiler Upgrade: Upgraded their boiler with steam traps

saveONenergy: All florescent lighting was revamped with new tubes, which will result in estimated $2000 in savings, annually.

Cistern/Rain Garden: Installed an above ground cistern and setup a rain garden near the alter with a small water feature.  Additionally the pump and distribution is  powered by a solar panel and battery.  The Church held an introduction for the cistern on Earth Day.

Emissions: St.John’s  began tracking their water reduction  in 2014. The graph below displays their progress thus far.

Sustainability Culture:

Sustainability is a theme – included in  their 5 marks of mission, which is in their weekly bulletin, specifically: ‘To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth’

Green Team: The church’s “Green Passion Ministry” is where ‘Green’ issues are brought up and discussed with the minister, leadership, and maintenance team. Many different people contribute ideas and want to be involved.
