Notable Sustainability Projects

2016

B Corp Certification:  Borealis achieved becoming a B Corp certified company in 2016; in order to achieve this, they assisted with fundraising for the Grand River Conservation Foundation and utilised product of which at least 80% was locally sourced. Borealis also converted all of their restaurants to carbon neutral by purchasing carbon offsets, installing solar panels and becoming a certified water efficient establishment

2014

Me-to-We Project: Borealis employees planted 1372 trees to offset the number of work t-shirts they purchased.

2013

Project Waste: Borealis’ successfully reduced the amount of waste being sent to landfill by 35%.

Equipment Schedule: Implemented a schedule to turn on their equipment at the latest times possible to reduce energy consumption.

Solar Heating: Borealis’ installed solar panels on their restaurant to heat up hot water. This project will result in an estimated savings of $2,000 each year.

 

Sustainability Culture

Borealis’ Green Team members are said to be the most forward thinking group in the company. Staff try to operate as sustainable as possible, making the right choices on how buy products. Borealis is unique in that they purchase only what they believe in, their motto is: “buycott instead of boycott”.

Energy is difficult to control, but we can control WHERE we buy.

Sustainability Goals

  • To work in an environmentally sustainable manner with a focus and dedication to continually reducing their “carbon footprint”. Borealis’ goal is simple: to be the food service industry leader in sustainability through becoming Carbon Neutral.
  • Discover the impact of buying local food and how this can reduce waste.

 

Accomplishments

Green Leadership Award (2013): Borealis received the Green Leadership Award for Canada from the Foodservice & Hospitality Magazine (the largest restaurant magazine in Canada).

 

Sustainability Award Nomination: Nominated for the Sustainability Award from the KW Chamber of Commerce.
