Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award

Awarded to Mike Morrice

This award is given to an outstanding individual that is a member in good standing of the Greater Kitchener Waterloo Chamber of Commerce and supports the Chamber’s Vision, Mission and Goals.

Award criteria include an individual, under the age of 30, who has tackled the challenges of entrepreneurship and enterprise management and who has demonstrated corporate and/or community leadership. In addition, the award recognizes impact on the community that this individual has achieved through good corporate citizenship.

Awarded to Mike Morrice

The Young Alumnus of the Year Award is given to recognize outstanding achievement by an alumnus of any WLU program and who is 30 years of age or under. Award criteria includes proven success in academia, entrepreneurship, citizenship or philanthropy; personal contribution to the betterment of society; is a source of pride for WLU alumni, students, faculty and staff; serves as an ambassador for WLU and the Laurier community at large. Mike was presented with this award for his co-founding of Sustainable Waterloo Region and continuing work in advancing the environmental sustainability of organizations across Waterloo Region.

Celebrating Milestones in Science have been established to recognize outstanding men and women who have been inspirational and have made significant contributions to society. By honouring our former Faculty of Science students we wish to inspire lives of our current Faculty of Science students to lead lives of leadership and purpose. As an alumni of both the BBA and the Computing and Computer Electronics program, Mike was honoured with an award in the category of Physics and Computer Science for his work with Sustainable Waterloo Region.

Commuter Challenge 2009 & 2010
1st Place-Top Participation in Sustainable Transportation Category (1-24 employees)

Awarded to Sustainable Waterloo Region

The Commuter Challenge encourages Canadians to leave the car at home and find environmentally friendly ways of commuting to work. By walking, cycling, busing, carpooling and video conferencing, the Sustainable Waterloo Region team saved 129.69 kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions in just one week. Due to the 100% commitment of the team, Sustainable Waterloo Region tied for 1st place in Waterloo Region for employers with less than 25 employees in both 2009 and 2010 Commuter Challenges.

LaunchPad $50K Venture Creation Competition
Social Entrepreneurship Stream

Awarded to Sustainable Waterloo Region

In the LaunchPad $50K Venture Creation Competition, students and community members work in teams and develop business plans to start successful businesses. Competitors in the 2009 contest included teams from Wilfrid Laurier University, the University of Waterloo, the University of Guelph, Conestoga College and McMaster University, as well as entrepreneurs and community members. In one of the toughest competitions to date, Sustainable Waterloo Region was the first organization to win 1st place for Social Entrepreneurship.
